Our One Big Mistake
James and I thought things through pretty thoroughly when we were making our preparations to leave. James poured over websites and resources and I talked to people who had done what we wanted to do and also to the Mexican Embassy. But there was one big mistake that we made. Hindsight is everything.
Our one big mistake was in cancelling our Canadian cell phones before we left to winter in Mexico. Although we knew we wouldn’t be spending a ton of time in Calgary anymore, we were planning on returning to Canada for summers. What we didn’t take into consideration was the expense of purchasing a new phone (becasue we are not signing a 3-year contract) and signing up for a brand new plan. Pay-as-you-go and month-to-month plans are expensive! We would have been WAY further ahead to keep at least one cell phone, put it on the lowest plan available over the winter to keep the number the same, and put call forwarding on it so anyone who called our cell while we were away would be automatically forwarded to our Calgary magic jack number that rings in Mexico.
So, it took a ton of time to figure out which plan would work for us in this new situation. But we’re finally back in alignment with our contemporary North American communication world. And, we’ll do the forwarding this time so we have a plan to automatically switch back next summer(s).
